The Safeguarding & Child Protection training pathway for Schools & Colleges detailed below is the recommended pathway for educational establishments in West Sussex.

In addition, there are a number of courses delivered by West Sussex Safeguarding Children Board which can contribute to staff continuous professional development.

Schools and further education institutions have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils under the Education Act 2002. They should be safe environments where children, young people and vulnerable adults can learn and develop in a culture where their welfare is promoted. Timely and appropriate safeguarding action should be taken for those who need extra help or may be suffering or likely to suffer significant harm.

The revised version of Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2016) requires all staff members working in schools and colleges to receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection training which is regularly updated. All staff members should also receive safeguarding and child protection updates (for example via email, e-bulletins and staff meetings), as required or annually as a minimum.

The designated safeguarding lead and any deputies should undergo training to provide them with knowledge and skills required to carry out the role. The training should be updated every two years. Their knowledge and skills should also be updated (for example via e-bulletins, meeting other designated safeguarding leads or taking time to digest safeguarding developments) at regular intervals or annually as a minimum, to keep up to date.
