Gypsy and Traveller - Part 1: History and Culture

Event Description This 20-minute online learning module is for anyone who works with adults and/or children from Gypsy and Traveller communities and focusses on their history, culture and traditions.

This is the first of four modules that focuses on the key themes and questions arising amongst service providers about Gypsies and Traveller, and seeks to support you in developing a new or refreshed understanding of the common issues that they face today so that you will be able to help these often overlooked communities access the services that they are entitles to and engage with them in a more meaningful way.
Training Objectives The aim of this module is to support you in learning about the history and culture of Gypsies and Travellers in the UK in order to develop your awareness of how you can assist these communities in accessing services and support. 
Learning Outcomes If you apply what you have learnt in this module, you will be able to;

  • Have an awareness of the different ethnicities of Gypsies and Travellers in the UK today.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Gypsy and Traveller history.
  • Know a little about Gypsy and Traveller accommodation and the nomadic lifestyle.
  • Have a greater appreciation of Gypsy and Traveller culture and traditions.

    Course Pre-Requisites  
    Course Instructions West Sussex County Council also provides more specific advice, guidance and training focused on issues surrounding education for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils and their families. The WS Traveller Education Support Team (TES) offer family support, school support and training to all educational settings and other agencies.
