Suicide Prevention

Event Description This 20 minute online learning module is for anyone wishing to learn more about supporting someone who may be at risk of suicide. In 2016 the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that there were 6000 deaths in the UK from suicide, with suicide being the leading cause of death in men under the age of 50, (above hearth disease, cancer, heart attacks or in road traffic accidents) and in women in their 20’s it is the highest it has been for two decades. Suicide is a preventable and avoidable death but it needs us all to be able to talk openly and directly about suicide, and in doing so remove the myth and stigma surrounding it, so that we can support people who are at risk. To be able to achieve this everyone should have some basic training in suicide awareness.
Training Objectives The aim of this module is to provide you with practice in handling difficult situations where a person may be at risk of suicide and support you in being able to encourage people to talk about their feelings and ask directly if they were thinking of ending their life. It will also provide you with resources that you can use and signpost to so that you can support someone at risk of suicide.
Learning Outcomes If you apply what you have learnt in this online module, you will be able to:

  • Have a conversation with a person using the steps; ‘See, Say, Signpost.’
  • Recognise why a person may be at risk of suicide and identify some of the signs (See).
  • Talk to someone if you’re concerned and ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide (Say).
  • Help them to stay safe for now and direct them to helpful resources (Signpost)
