Using Play And The Creative Arts To Communicate With Children And Young People

Event Description This module is for students studying towards the social work degree, educators and practising social workers.

It looks how play, activities and the creative arts can be used to communicate with children and young people.

Module 8 of the Communication Skills Suite from the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE).
Training Objectives The aim of this module is to help you identify the different ways children and young people communicate and why they communicate in these additional and alternative ways. 
Learning Outcomes If you apply what you have learnt in this module you will be able to:

  • Recognise why play-based, creative and activity-based methods can help children and young people to communicate, including:
  • the limitations of direct methods of communication
  • the importance of symbolism and metaphor
  • the dangers of interpretation
  • Identify what kind of underpinning knowledge and theoretical frameworks are helpful using play and creative activities
  • Recognise how to select the best mode and method of communication for particular contexts, purposes and children (e.g. artwork, stories, puppets)
  • Identify the importance of use of self, including preparation, self-awareness, reflection, ethical commitments and emotional availability
  • Acquire skills for the transferability of this perspective to other age groups
