Emergency Paediatric First Aid for Foster Carers

Course
This certificated one day course is for Foster Carers and WSCC Childrens Residential staff. It covers basic lifesaving first aid for children and infants (from birth to 18).

This event is strictly for pre-booked, confirmed delegates only. You will not be permitted to attend if you do not have a confirmed booking.
The aim of this course is to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required to deal with accidents and emergencies involving children and infants in line with Health and Safety (First Aid) legislation and Ofsted regulations.
If you apply what you have learnt on this course, you will be able to:

Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider:

  • Identify the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
  • Identify how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • Differentiate between an infant and a child for the purposes of first aid treatment

  • Be able to assess an emergency situation safely:

  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey on an infant and a child
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary


  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who are unresponsive:

  • Identify how to administer effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an infant and a child
  • Demonstrate CPR using an Infant and a child manikin
  • Justify when to place an infant or a child into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to place an infant and a child into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing for an infant and a child whilst they are in the recovery position
  • Identify how to administer first aid to an infant or a child who is experiencing a seizure


  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who are choking:

  • Identify when choking is:
  • Mild
  • Severe
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who is choking


  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding:


  • Identify the severity of external bleeding for an infant and a child
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to an infant or a child with external bleeding


  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who is suffering from shock:


  • Recognise when an infant or a child is suffering from shock
  • Identify how to administer first aid to an infant or a child who is suffering from shock


  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with bites, stings and minor injuries:

  • Explain how to administer first aid for:
  • Bites
  • Stings
  • Small cuts
  • Grazes
  • Bumps and bruises
  • Small splinters
  • Nose bleeds

  • Important notes
    Please be aware, CPR on a manikin must be demonstrated on the floor at least once for the purpose of assessment.

    Please consider carefully whether you are able to undertake these activities before applying.

    You will be asked on the day of the course to read and sign a Medical Declaration to confirm you know of no condition that would affect your ability to take part in the course.

    As you will be working on the floor, it is recommended that you wear casual clothing.

    You must bring Photo I.D. for the trainer to check;
    Your Passport / Driving Licence or Work I.D. Card are acceptable.

    If you do not provide Photo I.D. you will not be permitted to attend this event.

    You must read the Qualsafe Awards Training Commitment document (attached) before participating in this event.
