Sound and Secure - Unpacking early phonics for 3 and 4 year olds (Full day webinar)

This course is for practitioners working with 3 and 4 year olds in the pre-school sector. It is unsuitable at those working with under 3s.

This highly interactive and enjoyable Enable Children course is designed to support you in ensuring that playful approaches to phonics are woven naturally throughout everyday practice and to maximise the phonological progress of 3 and 4 year olds. Content will include interesting, low-cost games, rhymes and songs with minimum preparation and maximum impact.

There is a focus on specific elements that challenge many practitioners including when and how to introduce letter sounds, correct letter pronunciation and “sounding out” words as well as exploring the expectations of schools and parents as children approach their reception year (NB No previous knowledge of phonological concepts or terminology is required.)

This webinar is hosted on Microsoft Teams. You must have access to a computer or tablet, a stable internet connection and a web camera to participate. Mobile phones are not suitable due to the small screen.

The joining link will be emailed to you in the Gateway’s course place confirmation email. Please check your junk mail folder, if you cannot find it, please email
The aim of this course is as follows;

  • To provide a secure understanding of effective teaching of Phase 1 of the recommended Letters and Sounds programme.
  • To explore and embed the principles and practices which underpin children’s early phonological development.
  • If you apply what you have learnt in this course you will be able to:

  • Confidently plan and deliver a wide range of age-appropriate play-based activities, rhymes, games and songs which target specific aspects of phonological development.
  • Provide stimulating enabling environments (inside and out) which successfully support children’s progress in early phonics, and identify the most/least appropriate alphabet resources for your setting;
  • Promote children’s ability to distinguish between different everyday, environmental sounds and correctly isolate and pronounce letter sounds in readiness for the phonics they will encounter in the reception class.
  • You must bring the following documents with you to the course;
    1. Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS) Development Matters 2021 (New version. Either a digital version on another screen or a hard copy)
    2. Letters and Sounds Pack – Phase One (Department of Children’s Schools and Families (DCSF), National Strategies)
    (This is used throughout the course and will support participants’ learning during and after attendance. Training copies will be available, but it is strongly recommended that participants have their own copy)
    3. At least two commercially produced alphabet resources from your own setting. E.g. alphabet frieze, poster, puzzle, book or board game involving alphabet / rhyming / letter matching etc.
