Mental Capacity Act And Deprivation Of Liberty In Practice

Webinar
This one day webinar is for all West Sussex County Council workers who need to carry out a mental capacity assessment and understand best interests decision making. It will also provide an overview of deprivation of liberty and your responsibilities in relation to this.
The aim of this webinar is to enable you to apply case law to complete a robust mental capacity assessment, to understand how to make a best interests decision, and to understand how to record the process. The webinar will also cover how people can plan ahead for a time when they may lose capacity to make certain decisions.
If you apply what you have learnt on this webinar you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate working with the 5 statutory principles of the Mental Capacity Act
  • Complete a mental capacity assessment and apply the relevant case law
  • Identify how to make a best interests decision and learn to use a balance sheet to aid decision making
  • Explain the law in situations involving restrictions and restraint
  • Explain your responsibilities in relation to deprivation of liberty
  • Consider cases from the Court of Protection and the learning for health and social care staff from these
  • You should have some basic knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) before attending this course. If you do not have any prior knowledge of the MCA you can attend the half day course "Mental Capacity Act An Introduction" which will be available on the learning and Development Gateway. Alternatively there is MCA eLearning available on the Social Care Institute for Excellence website.
