Equality, Diversity and Anti-Discriminatory Practice in Working with Children (Foster Carers)

This one day course is for Foster Carers and Residential Staff who have not completed the two-day Cultural Competence training.

This course is part of the Foster Carers pathway and seeks to enable you to support children in your care to explore and develop a sense of identity.
The aim of this course is to assist you in increasing your awareness of the concepts of equality, diversity and discrimination in order that you can better ensure that your work with children enables and empowers them to know their rights and seek support and advice when necessary.

The course will also suggest tools and activities that you can use with children to help you explore these concepts.
If you apply what you have learned on the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the key concepts of Equality and Diversity.
  • Recognise and assess the impact of insensitivity and discrimination on children and families.
  • Identify the impact of personal, internal or external factors on the “construction” of the identity of children and seek their voice.
  • Apply strategies for enhancing cultural awareness, humility and respect in your work setting or in your home.
  • Consider the importance of identity and regard for equality and diversity in your recordings.
  • Before attending this course you should read and familiarise yourself with the pre-course information which is attached to this event.
