Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Basic Awareness Workshop: Whole Day

Workshop
This whole day workshop is for WSCC and local authority staff and partners agencies to increase awareness about Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

Modern Slavery is a priority for the West Sussex Safer Communities Partnership as one of the areas of high risk due to the severe and long-term impact that it has upon the vulnerable. It includes the exploitation of men, women and children. To tackle this issue effectively, a multi-agency response is required.

Under the Modern Slavery Act 2015, local authorities have a duty to notify the Home Office of any individual encountered in England and Wales who they believe is a suspected victim of slavery or human trafficking.

Modern Slavery is also a type of abuse within the Care Act 2014 that provides the statutory footing for adult safeguarding responses.

The whole day event will provide delegates an opportunity to examine the issues surrounding Modern Slavery in detail, using case studies to stimulate discussion and gain a deeper understanding of the causes, the identifying features, and the safeguarding protocols associated with this form of exploitation. A whole day allows a detailed investigation of Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking in the context of “Prevent, Pursue, Protect and Prepare”.
The West Sussex Community Safety and Wellbeing team offer both whole day and half-day workshops for professionals and community members to help raise awareness of this crime. The aim of these workshops is to develop an understanding of Modern Slavery and Human trafficking, providing local context regarding risks and threats in West Sussex and highlight sources of support for potential victims of trafficking (PVOT’s) via referral to the National Referral Mechanism.
If you apply what you have learnt on this workshop you will be able to demonstrate increased confidence and awareness in:

  • Recognising types of exploitation
  • Recognising Adult & Child Slavery Indicators
  • Awareness of the ‘Duty to Notify’
  • Identification and referral processes
  • Resources for professionals
