Event Description

This half day course covers basic life support and is suitable for Shared Lives Carers, Domiciliary Care Workers or Personal Assistants and staff new to care working with adults in Adult Care Provider Services or West Sussex County Council employees in either Adult or Children services who work with adults who require basic life support skills. It does not cover child or paediatric first aid.

This event is strictly for pre-booked, confirmed delegates only. You will not be permitted to attend if you do not have a confirmed booking.

Training Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required to meet basic life support in line with the guidelines set out in the Care Certificate Standard 12 – Basic Life Support.

Learning Outcomes

If you apply what you have learnt in this course you will be able to;

Describe how to conduct a primary survey of a casualty.

Identify when and how to call for help.

Demonstrate how to assess a casualty's level of consciousness.

Demonstrate how to open a casualty's airway and check breathing.

Demonstrate how to place an unconscious casualty into the recovery position that maintains an open airway why it is important.

Demonstrate how to administer effective Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation using a manikin and incorporating the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Describe how to identify a casualty with a partially and completely blocked airway obstruction.

Demonstrate how to treat a casualty who is choking.

Course Pre-Requisites

Important note:
There is a level of physical ability required to complete this course successfully.

In order to carry out the practical elements you will need to be able to work on the floor at various times throughout the course, including placing a casualty in the Recovery Position, various First Aid scenarios and simulated CPR on a manikin - which must be demonstrated on the floor.

You will be asked on the day of the course to read and sign a Medical Declaration to confirm you know of no condition that would affect your ability to take part in the course.
