Working With People That Self-Neglect

This one day workshop is provided for anyone working with individuals at risk of severe self-neglect.

Working with the Sussex Guidance to support people who self-neglect (in Sussex Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures) this workshop will support professionals working in one of the most difficult and challenging areas of practice.

This practice based course will use case scenarios to support group discussion and draw on learning from Safeguarding Adults Reviews and research in the public domain to enhance learning and understanding of the subject matter.
The aim of this workshop is to support professionals to work with individuals (predominantly living in the community) that may be at risk of severe self-neglect. Ensuring that individuals who are neglecting themselves are empowered as far as possible to understand the implications of their actions; building a multi-agency understanding of the issues involved and ensuring agencies and organisations adhere to the key principles of empowerment, protection, prevention, proportionality, partnership and accountability.
If you apply what you have learnt on this workshop you will be able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of individuals who may self-neglect
  • Demonstrate a person-centred approach which supports the right of the individual to be treated with respect and dignity
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of effective multi-agency working in line with the Sussex policy
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the different powers and duties provided by legislation and their relevance to the situation and individuals' need
