Children and Young People who present with Harmful Sexual Behaviour

Course
The Assessment and Treatment Service (ATS) are a specialist team in West Sussex working with children and young people who engage in Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB) to others.
This one day course is designed for professionals working with children and young people (under 18) across a range of contexts and will involve both interactive and group-based exercises to promote a multi-agency response to supporting children who engage in Harmful Sexual Behaviour.

The course is designed for social care, IPEH, police, health and education colleagues. This course is not appropriate for foster carers or residential staff. There is a separate training course for residential staff.

Important notice:
Children’s residential staff should not book onto this course as bespoke workshops are currently being planned to cover this safeguarding topic.
The aim of this course is to create awareness of young people who sexually harm others, what to do in the event of the discovery of such behaviour and how to support young people to move forward safely.

The course will include interactive learning, case studies, research findings, and make reference to the WSCC Serious Case Review, 'John'.
If you apply what you have learnt on this course you will be able to:

  • Identify Harmful Sexual Behaviour
  • Understand the pathways that might lead a young person to sexually harm

  • Consider the ‘risks’ and ‘strengths’ in supporting the young person to move forward safely
  • Think about the different roles a multi-agency network can play in supporting the young person.
  • Understand the role of the ATS
  • In order to attend this course it is a pre-requisite that you have already completed the online course 'Safeguarding Children' which is available through the WSSCB website and the Learning and Development Gateway. You should also have attended the 'Working Together to Safeguard Children' course.
