Getting to Know You - Observation, Assessment, and Next Steps

Course
This one day course is for Early Years and Childcare Practitioners.

It seeks to provide you with a practical training session that will support you, as a key person, in ensuring that proven and manageable approaches to gathering observations are woven naturally through your everyday practice.

You will explore methods and practices which inform accurate assessments, identify appropriate next steps and support you in monitoring the progress of the children you work with.
The aims of this course are as follows;

  • To enhance your understanding of the Early Years foundation Stages (EYFS) observation and planning cycle and support its implementation in your setting;
  • To secure full understanding of formative and summative assessment.
  • If you apply what you have learnt on tis course you will be able to:

  • Employ effective and manageable approaches to observing and identifying children’s interests, strengths and needs
  • Have confidence in making best-fit assessments and identifying appropriate next steps for children.
  • Strengthen partnership with parents and colleagues, and share what you have learnt in order to enhance practice in your setting.
  • You will need to bring the following documents with you:
    1. Early years Foundation Stages (EYFS) Development Matters
    2. Observations AND assessment records of 2 children in your setting.

    Course Costs
    Training Subscription members can book onto this course at no additional cost as you have already paid into our training subscription scheme and you will use tokens for payment for this course. The number of tokens each course requires can be found in the Course Brochure. We will take the tokens used off your total and send you a monthly report so you know how many you have used.

    Please check that you have enough tokens to purchase this course before you book. If not, you have the option to purchase additional tokens at any time, please email ipeh.practice.improvement@westsussex.gov.uk for details. Alternatively, you can book using the ‘pay-as-you-go’ rate.

    Pay-as-you-go
    Schools who are not part of the Early Years Training Subscription, PVI Care Providers, members of the public and West Sussex County Council staff are required to pay the pay-as-you-go rate. Schools may join the Early Years Training Subscription scheme. Details are available on the West Sussex County Council Website.
