Makaton Taster

This 2.5 hour course is for practitioners who wish to use Makaton at work.

Participants must have an understanding of early communication skills.

The cost includes some basic resources.
The aim of this course is to provide you with a basic introduction to Makaton.

It will support you in raising your awareness of multi modal forms of communication including signs, symbols, speech and body language to convey information and how Makaton can support communication to be more effective and meaningful.
If you apply what you have learnt in this course you will be able to;

  • Describe the feelings and emotions associated with a communication difficulty.
  • Describe how Makaton can help communication to be more effective and meaningful for individual with communication difficulties.
  • Evaluate individual Makaton users language and vocabulary needs.
  • Demonstrate key word signing, 20 signs and symbols to support initial communication and additional signs and symbols to meet the participants needs.
  • This course has been arranged for Early Years settings. Other groups are welcome to attend, but please read the course costs below before booking.

    Course Costs
    Training Subscription members can book onto this course at no additional cost as you have already paid into our training subscription scheme and you will use tokens for payment for this course. The number of tokens each course requires can be found in the Course Brochure. We will take the tokens used off your total and send you a monthly report so you know how many you have used.

    Please check that you have enough tokens to purchase this course before you book. If not, you have the option to purchase additional tokens at any time, please email for details. Alternatively, you can book using the ‘pay-as-you-go’ rate.

    IPEH staff, should contact the Practice Improvement team if they wish to attend.

    Schools who are not part of the Early Years Training Subscription, PVI Care Providers, members of the public and West Sussex County Council staff are required to pay the pay-as-you-go rate. Schools may join the Early Years Training Subscription scheme. Details are available on the West Sussex County Council Website.
