Effective Communication with Children

Course
This two day course is for Level 3 foster carers, residential staff, Think Family and newly qualified social workers. It is designed for all professionals working with children, young people and their families in a social care setting.

Many young people may experience difficulties engaging with professionals and others in expressing their emotions in a readily understandable manner.

This course provides the opportunity for you to try out a range of methods in enabling children to communicate in many different ways and to consider how you might engage with them.

Please Note: Please ensure you print off and read the Course Pre-Requisites and the pre-course reading before attending the course and bring them with you to refer to.
The aim of this course is to explore the benefits of applying experiential skills and techniques, underpinned by theory and best practice, when engaged in working with children and young people. It will also help you to devise a programme of work for a child or young person you are currently working with.
If you apply what you have learnt on the course you will be able to:

  • Comprehend the need for a multifaceted and theoretically based approach to the assessment of need in the care management of children
  • Explore skills required to assess need and implement a care plan for individual children
  • Distinguish stages of development and developmental delays
  • Recognise your own experience and personal resources, and how they affect and can contribute to your work with children and families
  • Demonstrate increased techniques for communicating with children
  • Employ the skills and knowledge learned to undertake direct work with children
  • Please read the documents attached to the joining instructions before attending the course. You do not need to print these documents.

You will be studying a young person you are working with in depth. You cannot do this work retrospectively so, please ensure you bring details of a young person you are currently working with that you wish to discuss that plan a programme of work for. You will need to know about their history and their support network.
