Paediatric First Aid

Workshop
This two day course is for West Sussex County Council employees who work in Children's Residential Services.

It is suitable if you work within Children's services where a risk assessment has indicated that a lower level of first aid training, covering emergency protocols for children and young people is necessary.

Ofsted advise that if you look after young people and children up until puberty you should have the Paediatric training and above that Adult First Aid training.
The aim of this course is to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required to deal with accidents and emergencies involving young children and adults in the workplace in line with Health and Safety (First Aid) legislation and Ofsted regulations.
If you apply what you have learnt on this course you will be able to:

  • who is unresponsive and not breathing normally, including child and infant resuscitation
  • who has a foreign body airway obstruction
  • with external bleeding
  • with injuries to bones, joints and muscles
  • Explain and discuss how to administer emergency first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness:
  • sickle cell crisis
  • diabetic emergencies
  • asthma attack
  • allergic reaction
  • meningitis
  • febrile convulsions
  • Explain and discuss how to administer first aid to an infant and a child:
  • who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold
  • who has sustained an electric shock
  • with burns or scalds
  • who has been poisoned
  • who has been bitten or stung
  • with minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bumps and bruises, small splinters and nose bleeds
  • with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose

  • You must read the Qualsafe Awards Training Commitment document (attached) before participating in this event.

This event is strictly for pre-booked, confirmed delegates only. You will not be permitted to attend if you do not have a confirmed booking.

You must bring Photo I.D. for the trainer to check, e.g. Passport / Driving Licence / Work I.D. Card.
If you do not provide Photo I.D. you will not be permitted to attend this event.
There is a level of physical ability required to complete this course successfully. In order to carry out the practical elements you will need to be able to work on the floor at various times throughout the course, including placing a casualty in the Recovery Position, various First Aid scenarios and simulated CPR on a manikin - which must be demonstrated on the floor.

Please consider carefully whether you are able to undertake these activities before applying.
If you are unable to do so, please contact Learning and Development for further advice before booking a place on this course: mailto:learninganddevelopment@westsussex.gov.uk

You will be asked on the day of the course to read and sign a Medical Declaration to confirm you know of no condition that would affect your ability to take part in the course.
